Field Trip: Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge and Sandhill Crane Fly-in at Woodbridge Ecological Reserve

Date: Saturday January 25, 2020

Time: 12:00 PM

**FILLED-WAIT LIST ONLY! (NSAS Event)

Details:

Leader: Dale Claypoole of Friends of Stone Lakes and Woodbridge Ecological Reserve docent.

Description: **Please note, this field trip is now filled and there is a waiting list. RSVP to Wendy Cole: beehaven2@comcast.net to get on the list. All participants MUST obtain a California Lands pass, which can be done online at this link: https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/licensing/lands-pass. If you prefer, you can call (800) 565-1458. The cost is $4.58. If you have a current California hunting or fishing license you may use that in lieu of the lands pass, but you must have it with you.

We will arrive at Stones Lake Refuge at Noon for a tour of this 6,000- acre refuge, the wintering home to dunlins, sandpipers, and avocets, as well as waterfowl, and Greater Sandhill Cranes.

After lunch we will head over to Woodbridge for the crane fly-in. This tour consists of viewing Sandhill Cranes and other unique wintering waterfowl, hearing a presentation on Sandhill Cranes, and viewing the cranes' impressive, nightly behaviors at a location that is only open to the public during these special tours.

Tours conclude a half hour after sunset with the anticipated fly-in of the cranes at the North Site, where a viewing shelter allows us to be hidden from the incoming birds. It is an awesome sight to view these magnificent birds warbling and flying in to roost for the night.

Wear appropriate clothing, and bring binoculars, lunch and your Lands pass!
