Field Trip: Sacrameno Area and American River Parkway

Date: Saturday September 23, 2017

Time: 9:00 AM

During this field trip, we will view fall migrants in the Sacramento area and bird in several of the parks along the American River Parkway, which follows the American River. (NSAS Event)

Details:

Leader: Bruce Thomsen

Description: We will visit three parks along the American River Parkway in Sacramento: William B. Pond Recreation Area, Ancil Hoffman Park, and Sacramento Bar Park. Each park is bordered on the south by the American River and consists of riparian, oak woodlands and grasslands.

Each park offers something different. Pond Recreation area was an active gravel quarry until the 1960’s. The area was reclaimed and consists of oak woodlands and grasslands with quiet back waters from the river. Ancil Hoffman park offers a 100+ acre natural area and the Effie Yeaw Nature Center. Sacramento Bar was an area dredged for gold in the late 1800s with tailing piles, oaks, riparian, and open spaces.

Bring: Water, lunch, snack, good walking shoes. We will drive to each park and then walk some of the trails in them.
