Field Trip: Pinnacles National Park

Date: Saturday April 08, 2017

Time: 9:00 AM

Join Park Ranger Nico Ramirez for a field trip through Pinnacles National Park in the Gabilan Range. (NSAS Event)

Details:

Leader: Ranger Nico Ramirez

Description: Located in the Gabilan Range, Pinnacles National Park was formed by volcanic action millions of years ago. Today the area can be hot in the summer, but springtime can be warm with multitudes of wildflowers and an interesting array of birds. There is a release area for captive-raised California Condors that are seen frequently. Other birds of interest are Prairie and Peregrine Falcons, Golden Eagles, Greater Roadrunner, Costa’s Hummingbird, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Western Kingbird, Rock Wren, Canyon Wren, and Sage Sparrow. Their bird list consists of 181 species with many other accidentals.

Be prepared for warm weather--water, lunch, hat, sun screen, good walking shoes. (Trails will be pretty rocky with loose rocks). Entrance per vehicle is $15.00.

Limited to 15 participants. RSVP to Bruce Thomsen at brucecthomsen@yahoo.com, (707) 2241906 or (209) 728-4631 by April 1.

Directions: From Napa, drive through Jamison Canyon to Interstate 80. Exit immediately to Interstate 680 (south). Drive to San Jose on 680 until you merge onto Highway 101 (south) in San Jose. Continue on 101 until just south of Gilroy and exit onto Highway 25 to Hollister. Drive through Hollister and remain on Highway 25 for about 30 miles to Highway 146 and turn right onto 146. Turn left into the Pinnacles visitor center. Meet the guide at the East Entrance visitor center at 9:00 a.m.
