From 10:00 to 10:45-11:00: Native Plants and Backyard Designs to Attract Birds. Nancy Piotrowski and Mark Stephenson of the Napa-Solano Audubon Society will team up to give an overview of native herbaceous and annual plants and flowers that can be used to attract birds, highlighting the birds that may visit Bay Area backyards and gardens. Nancy will be addressing the plant side of the equation and Mark will focus on birds’ wants and needs, highlighting some tools that are out there and good choices for bringing in birds.
From 11:00 to 12:00: Best Management Practices to Reduce Impacts on Nesting Birds During Tree Care. Gillian Martin of Tree Care for Birds and the Cavity Conservation Initiative (see bio below) will shed light on bird protection regulations and share best practices during tree and landscape care, including reducing impacts on nesting birds by assessing habitat value, conducting a pre-work inspection, identifying signs of nesting, determining if a nest is active, and responding in a bird emergency. Native bird populations are declining by nearly 30% worldwide. Gardeners can help by using these and other practices to create bird-friendly gardens and a diverse urban forest.
