Details:

Cancelled. We will begin with our volunteer appreciation celebration with refreshments. Following we have our Executive Officer Elections. After official business is taken care of there will be a wonderful presentation about Bluebird conservation and recovery efforts.

There's a conservation victory going on right here in your own neighborhood: Bluebirds! Severe population declines in this species have been turned around, due in part to the conservation efforts of citizen activists from all walks of life. In the late 1970s, many heeded the call of the newly-formed North American Bluebird Society to put up nestboxes specifically designed for bluebirds.

Tonight's program will start with the presentation of a short film that chronicles the efforts of one such conservationist, Alfred Larson, otherwise known as "Bluebird Man". The movie features beautiful scenery, footage of all three species of bluebirds, and a powerful narrative that will leave you feeling inspired. Following the film, Georgette Howington of the California Bluebird Recovery Program will present a summary of this organization's local work to preserve Western Bluebirds and other cavity-nesting birds. Lastly, Holly Jessop will present information on how you can help sustain the bluebird conservation victory in your own neighborhood, with an update on Napa-Solano Audubon's nestbox program.

Location: Florence Douglas Senior Center / 333 Amador St., Vallejo, CA

"Bluebird Man" is a 30-minute film by the non-profit video production company, Wild Lens, Inc (http://www.bluebirdman.com/). Georgett Howington is the Assistant Directory of the California Bluebird Recovery Program (http://www.cbrp.org/) who is based in Walnut Creek, CA. Holly Jessop is a scientist for the California Environmental Protection Agency and the volunteer coordinator for the Napa-Solano Audubon Nestbox Program (http://www.napasolanoaudubon.com/Monitoring/NestboxTrails).
