Event: Fall Hawk Migration Workshop and Beginning Bird Walk at Newell Preserve

Date: Saturday September 08, 2018

Time: 9:00 AM

Walks and workshops aimed at Beginning Birders are held twice a month on Saturdays. All workshops begin at 9 a.m., followed by bird walks from 9:30 a.m. until noon. (NSAS Event)

Details:

With its wide-open spaces, Newell Preserve’s 620 acres is a prime location to view resident and migratory raptors. Please join us for a workshop focusing on the annual fall hawk migration. We’ll hone our raptor ID skills and get ready for the fall and winter season when we can expect to see many more hawks in the area.

The workshop will last from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m., followed by a walk through the preserve. There is a moderate up-hill grade to the Eucalyptus grove, where White-tailed Kites are frequently seen hunting and roosting. Sightings at this preserve have also included Golden Eagles and Northern Harriers. Walks are appropriate for all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). Please wear sturdy walking shoes or boots and bring water and binoculars if you have them. Layers and a strong insect repellent are recommended.

Directions: From Vallejo, take the 29 North to American Canyon. Turn right, going east, onto Donaldson Way East. Drive approximately one mile to the end, make a left at Newell Drive. The parking lot will be on the right. Parking is Free. Bathroom is available at the parking lot.
