Details:

The country of Guyana is located on the northeast shoulder of South America. It is bordered by Venezuela, Brazil, Suriname and the Atlantic Ocean. The diversity of habitats within Guyana supports just over 800 species of birds from 72 different families. Due to its history and location, much of Guyana remains in a pristine natural state that is comprised of coastal waters, mangroves, marshes, savannas and mountains with the remaining 80% in tropical rainforest.

Within these habitats there are 225 species of mammals, 120 of which are bats. Other mammals include Jaguars, Capybara, Giant Anteater, Giant River Otter and Tapir and approximately 814 species of birds, including Blood-colored Woodpecker, Guiana Cock-of-the-Rock, Toco Toucan, Green Aracari, Crimson Fruit Crow, Caica Parrot, Red-shouldered Macaw, Crimson-hooded Manakin and Finsch’s Euphonia. Guyana has a healthy population of Harpy Eagles, and the national bird of Guyana, the Hoatzin, found along the banks of the rivers of the coastal region.

Join us on this exploration through a presentation with photos Ken Wilson has taken on past tours to this largely unbirded country.

A native New Zealander, Ken has been leading nature and birdwatching tours worldwide since 1995 through his company Talon Tours. His passion for photography began in the early 1970’s and continues to grow, and we'll see many of his beautiful photos during this presentation. Ken is a member of Madrone Audubon and is active with conservation and censuses such as Breeding Bird Atlas and Hawkwatch at Marin Headlands. Having organized tours to many parts of the world, Talon Tours is currently focusing on Panama, Honduras and Guyana.
