Event: International Bird Rescue - Life After Release

Date: Thursday October 09, 2014

Time: 7:00 PM

International Bird Rescue's IBR) clinical veterinarian, Dr. Rebecca Duerr, presents the remarkable stories of individual birds after their recovery and release from IBR. Held at the Florence Douglas Senior Center at 333 Amador Street in Vallejo. (NSAS Event)

Details:

International Bird Rescue (IBR) was formed in 1971 after the disastrous Arizona and Oregon Standard Oil spill in San Francisco Bay. Since that time, IBR staff have responded to more than 200 oil spills world wide and continually work to improve the care of wild aquatic birds whether coming into temporary captivity due to oiling, illness, parental separation, or injury. Each year, IBR receives approximately 5000 aquatic birds between our two year round wildlife clinics that serve Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay. In an effort to track how their patients do after release, each bird has been federally banded with a metal band prior to release since 1979. Since 2009, more than 1150 rehabilitated and released Brown Pelicans have also been banded with easy-to-read, blue plastic bands. In this talk, IBR's clinical veterinarian, Dr. Rebecca Duerr will tell us about IBR's mission and some of the remarkable stories of the lives of individual birds after their recovery and release, through information garnered from resightings, restrandings, and band returns.

Dr. Rebecca Duerr is the clinical veterinarian at International Bird Rescue's two wildlife clinics in California. She received her DVM, MPVM, and PhD degrees from the University of California at Davis, with graduate work focused on the care of oiled seabirds. She serves on the Board of Directors of the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association.

This general meeting/program will begin at 7 p.m. with 15 minutes of social activities and refreshments, followed by announcements and the presentation. The meeting will be held at Florence Douglas Senior Center, 333 Amador St., in Vallejo, CA. Click here for directions.
